I decided to leave my full time job recently to concentrate on creating my own software startup company. I want to create apps for Android devices, including Google TV.

However, here is the catch: I want to do this with as little money as possible! We live in the age of the internet and everything can be done online, right? Well, I’m about to find out.

Since I’m starting with myself, I don’t need an office; I can work from home. I have a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone and a good internet connection. Now, I need to figure out how to set up all the other things that make a company work and would eventually allow a small team to work together on software projects.

In my previous jobs, IT stuff and project management tools were mostly maintained by other folks. Now I have to figure out how to do the same kinds of things myself.

I have a strong technical background in software design and development, but I have never tackled a product from beginning to end on my own. So there are many new skills that will be needed to market and sell a successful product.

So the first step is to get a environment for a small team of software developers. Here is my wish list:

  • Cheap – or even free if possible,
  • Hosted – I don’t want to maintain my own servers to host any software, at least¬†initially,
  • No long term contracts – I want to be able to try various options without being financially committed to any particular solution,
  • Many alternatives – if at all possible, I want to avoid any proprietary options and rather prefer open-source solutions,
  • Previous experience – although I know I will have to learn new skills, I would prefer products that I’ve used before.

Lots to do, but I think it will be lots of fun too! I’ll keep you posted on this blog.
